The Saturn Ion, produced by General Motors between 2003 and 2007, was a compact car that succeeded the Saturn S-Series. It was available in sedan and coupe body styles and was constructed on GM's Delta platform, which was also used by the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5. The Ion was known for its unique Quad Coupe design, which included rear-hinged half doors on both sides, as well as polymer plastic body panels that prevented denting and corrosion. The Ion had many four-cylinder engine options, including the base 2.2-liter Ecotec inline-four engine. The brand also released the performance-oriented Ion Red Line in 2004, which included a supercharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine.
The standard Ion offered a variety of transmission options, including a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic, and discontinued the continuously variable transmission (CVT) after 2004 due to reliability issues. One of the most distinctive interior features of the Ion was its center-mounted instrument cluster, which elicited mixed opinions. Fuel economy was competitive at the time, with the standard 2.2-liter engine achieving approximately 22-26 mpg in the city and 30-34 mpg on the highway, depending on the transmission. Production of the Ion ceased in 2007 as GM began phasing out the Saturn brand.
