The GMC Sonoma was a compact pickup truck produced by General Motors from 1982 to 2004, offering a smaller, more maneuverable vehicle with the utility of a pickup bed. It was essentially the GMC equivalent of the Chevrolet S-10, and it received numerous modifications and revisions over its two-decade production run. The first generation shared a platform the with S-10 and the Isuzu Hombre, offering a variety of options, including two-door normal and extended cabs. The second generation had a considerable redesign, with smoother lines, modern features, and enhanced safety, as well as a variety of body options such as normal cab, extended cab, and crew cab.

The Sonoma was available with a variety of powertrain options, including four-cylinder engines such as the 2.2-liter inline-four engine for modest power and decent fuel economy, as well as V6 engines such as the 4.3-liter V6, which provided higher towing capability and performance. Transmission options included both manual and automatic transmission, with five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics being the most popular. The Sonoma was available in a variety of trim levels, from basic work trucks to more feature-rich models. The standout trim was the ZR2 package, designed for off-road enthusiasts, featuring a factory lift, heavy-duty suspension, and larger off-road tires. The production of the Sonoma stopped in 2004, as GM turned its focus to the larger, midsize GMC Canyon.
