What are the Major Parts of an Engine?

An engine is a complex mechanical system that turns fuel into mechanical energy to power a vehicle or machinery. The major components of an internal combustion engine (like those found in cars) are as follows:

1. Engine Block

   The engine block serves as the main housing for all of the engine's components, including the cylinders and various passageways for coolant, oil, and air.

2. Pistons

   Pistons are cylindrical components that move up and down within the engine cylinders and are crucial in compressing the air-fuel mixture to convert it into mechanical energy.

3. Valves

   Valves, which are found in the cylinder head, regulate the flow of air and exhaust gases in and out of the combustion chamber.

4. Valve Cover

   A valve cover, also known as a camshaft cover, sits on top of the cylinder head and seals the valve train while helping to keep the oil inside the engine.

5. Camshaft

   The camshaft is a shaft with specially shaped lobes or cams that control the opening and closing of the engine's valves and are responsible for the precise timing of valve events.
